Buffalo Charge 2022, 4×4 outdoor event on the slopes of Kilimanjaro

The Buffalo Charge is back again in Tanzania. The charge is a fun off road challenge event run under the Arusha Motor Sports club (AMSC). Teams of up to 5 participants per vehicle are required to cover a pre-determined course where the goal is to pass a series of check points in the shortest possible distance.

The event is based on good map reading, teamwork and driver ability rather than speed. The purpose of the Buffalo Charge is to raise money for the Arusha Giraffe Center.

This weekend, on the 1st of October 2022, entrants are required to visit 10 checkpoints scattered over 100 km2 of rough terrain within a 10 hour period. Each team is supplied with a 1:500.000 scale map of the venue, coordinates of the 10 check points. Starting point will be Simba farm. One of the oldest farms on the slopes of West Kilimanjaro.

What cars

The event is only open to “a vehicle with four wheels of the same size.” The majority of the vehicles are old timers, classic 4×4 Land Rovers (series 107, 109, Defenders, etc.,), army jeeps, Land Cruisers and modified cars. The last picture is a homemade dune buggy, or better known in military terms as a light strike vehicle on a modified VW bus chassis.  All is approved as long as the open vehicle has a roll cage.

Terrain

All teams must conquer the rough rocky, forest, dusty terrain. Only driving the plains will permit speed. All check points are hidden in the forest, river beds or canyons. The winning team is the one who made all checkpoints not in the shortest time but in the shortest distance to each control point.
