Retrial of UK minister Huhne's ex wife begins after jury failed to reach verdict

Over 5 dagen

Former cabinet minister Chris Huhne's ex wife, Vicky Pryce, is tried over claims that she took her then husband's speeding points after a driving offence in 2003. The retrial comes after the jury at Southwark Crown Court failed to reach a verdict on February 20 after four days of deliberation.

The panel of eight women and four men were discharged after they told the court it was "highly unlikely" they could make a majority decision.

Pryce claimed she was forced to take the points by Huhne because he wanted to avoid prosecution. Before his trial started, Huhne admitted he deceived the police and was warned he faces jail. He will be sentenced once the case against his ex-wife is concluded.

ICC resumes trial of Jean-Pierre Bemba early following defense request

Over 5 dagen

The International Criminal Court (ICC) resumes its hearings in the trial of Jean Pierre-Bemba after the defense requested the resumption of the trial. Judges suspended the trial of the former politician from the Democratic Republic of Congo in December 2012 to enable the defense to prepare for a proposed change to "the legal characterization of the facts" of the charges.

However, the defense informed judges in February that it would not conduct any additional preparations citing lack of funds, the limited time frame, and insufficient notice given to them by the judges. It was followed by a formal request to resume the trial as early as possible.

Bemba is accused of failing to stop the soldiers of his Movement for the Liberation of Congo from committing crimes against humanity and war crimes during the 2002-2003 armed conflict in the Central African Republic.

In September 2012, trial judges said that they might change the facts as "owing to the circumstances at the time, he should have known" about the crimes.

Bemba has been on trial at the ICC since November 2010 and denies all charges against him.
