Terugblikkend kan ik best waardering voor zijn oeuvre opbrengen, maar ik moet erkennen dat de muziek me eigenlijk nauwelijks raakt. Dat heb je wel eens, artiesten waarmee je het wel probeert maar waar je op gegeven moment niet echt een match mee hebt.
Hopelijk geeft onderstaand overzicht van mijn favoriete albums desondanks een blik op wat mij betreft prachtige muziek van 1966 tot en met 2016. Ook al is het ene jaartal het andere niet. Kom ik in 2002 niet eens tot tien goede albums, in 1991 word ik overstelpt met meesterwerken die bijna allemaal op plek één hadden kunnen staan. Voor sommige jaartallen viel de keuze op vijftien platen. De reden is simpel. De lijstjes met vijftien blijken een uitzonderlijk goed jaar waarbij een top tien niet zou volstaan.
De samenstelling is gebaseerd op veelvuldig luisteren de afgelopen vier, vijf jaar. En dat is nogal ingrijpend. Ik kom soms tot pijnlijke om niet te zeggen confronterende conclusies. De plaat die ik ooit geweldig goed vond klinkt in 2023 nogal dunnetjes of ronduit teleurstellend.
In 1976 kreeg ik Beautiful Noise van Neil Diamond cadeau, in 1977 kocht ik A Farewell To Kings van Rush. Na verloop van tijd merkte ik dat de artistieke kwaliteit van beide platen steeds verder weg zakte. De reden is ongetwijfeld dat ik intussen heel veel andere muziek en bijbehorende muzikale ontwikkelingen heb gehoord. Dan gaat de lat van wat je toen ook nú nog goed vindt geleidelijk verschuiven.
Het omgekeerde is natuurlijk veel mooier. Dat zich decennia later, volkomen onverwacht, de ware artistieke omvang aan je openbaart. Het debuut van Van Halen blijkt een meer dan aangename herontdekking. In 1978 was de Amerikaanse band met de Nederlandse broertjes een van de hardrockplaten waar ik naar luisterde. Onlangs viel me op hoe goed en uniek deze plaat na al die jaren nog altijd is.
Toch moet je kritisch durven zijn tegenover zogenaamde klassiekers. Ook tot mijn eigen verbazing schittert Nick Drake in de lijstjes door afwezigheid. Toen ik zijn lp’s onlangs nog eens op de draaitafel legde, viel me op dat elk werk slechts een verzameling liedjes bevat; een albumvorm met kop en staart ontbreekt enigszins. Dat wringt, hoe prachtig die songs verder natuurlijk ook zijn.
Kritisch luisteren is niet alleen heroverwegen maar ook blijven (her)ontdekken. Ik spreek weleens mensen die in hun muziekverleden zijn blijven hangen en zich vastklampen aan wat ze al kennen. Albumlijstjes maken gebaseerd op herinnering, op wat je destijds goed vond, is me te makkelijk. Je leeft in het nu en niet in het verleden. Het oordeel over toen wordt meestal ingekleurd door het sentiment van de nostalgie.
Wanneer ik naar muziek luister maak ik geen onderscheid tussen genres en stijlen. Behalve popmuziek kom je in onderstaande jaaroverzichten jazz, jazzrock en zelfs soundtracks tegen. Muziek is muziek. Da’s makkelijk gezegd. Want als je de vaak zeer uiteenlopende variëteit binnen een jaartal beseft, is het vastleggen van een chronologische voorkeur best lastig. Soms bijna niet te doen. In veel gevallen vindt er dan een nieuwe confrontatie plaats: een botsing tussen emotie en ratio, tussen hart en hoofd.
Uiteindelijk kom ik tot de vraag waar het bij zo’n lijstje eigenlijk om draait. Wat mij betreft om platen die mij op de een of andere manier persoonlijk raken. Niet om albums die ik goed moet vinden, historisch belangrijk of invloedrijk zijn.
Luisteren naar muziek doe ik in de avonduren. Dan is er tijd en rust om er eens goed voor te gaan zitten. Want dat is wat het is. Zitten, luisteren, de muziek in je opnemen, met als mogelijke bijvangst het opdoen van nieuwe inzichten. Wat dat laatste betreft helpt het wanneer je met gelijkgestemden uitvoerige discussies kunt voeren over de meest uiteenlopende albums. Zeker wanneer iemand met inhoudelijke argumenten en ervaring kan uitleggen waarom je toch eens naar die ene lp zou moeten luisteren.
In onderstaande lijstjes ontbreken live-albums. In veel gevallen betreft het immers een ’the best of’ van een artiest (uitgezonderd de niet eerder uitgebrachte songs op Time Fades Away van Neil Young, en het als nieuwe studioplaat bedoelde Between Nothingness & Eternity van Mahavishnu Orchestra).
Maar beschouw de overzichten vooral als een ontdekkingsreis tussen 1966 en 2016. Er zullen platen tussen staan die je wellicht niet kent, of artiesten waarvan je nooit hebt gehoord. De belangrijkste les: je leert een album pas waarderen wanneer je niet te snel oordeelt en je jezelf de tijd gunt ‘m goed te leren kennen. Zoals met alles in het leven. Records Are Like Life heet een album van de singersongwriter Andy Pratt.
